The Pit Post Voltaire

The Pit Post Voltaire

wrote in Candide, his famous French satire and inarguably one of the greatest 100 books ever written, that “we must cultivate our garden.”  Candide’s enlightenment occurs at the novel’s end when he and his companions meet an old Turk who runs a small farm with his two sons and two daughters.  The old man tells the travelers that their labors “preserve them from three great evils: idleness, vice, and want.”  Reflecting upon this, Candide’s final words, and the words with which Voltaire ends his masterpiece, are  “Il faut cultiver notre jardin.”
